6.3 Loss and grief, relatives perspective



Sorrow can be triggered by events in the dementia process, triggers my be:

• Signs that something is not right

• Diagnosis

• The person with dementia is unable to take care of himself/herself

• It becomes difficult to take care of the person with dementia

• Move to dementia housing

• The person with dementia may not recognize the relative or behave extravagantly or otherwise strangely

• The person with dementia loses the ability to speak 

These events do not have to follow the order in which they are stated, but each event can be a factor that contributes to more grief and despair among the relatives.
