6.1 Loss and grief in relation to dementia, an introduction

The base in palliative care

In care and care work, one can meet elderly and sick people at the end of life, when there is a short time left of a person's life. The person then receives palliative care at the end of life. Palliative means soothing. Soothing care is not given for a person to become healthier, but is given for incurable illness, the goal is to ensure that the last time in life becomes as painless and good as possible.

Sometimes a person can have a serious illness that cannot be cured and that will also likely lead to the person dying from the disease in the long run. This means that the person can have palliative care even if it is not at the end of life.
